My music files only play in VLC
When I first installed Linux, I had Rhythmbox. It worked fine, although I wasn't crazy about it. Now, none of my music files work in anything other than VLC. When I open up a music file (in any player, not just Rhythmbox), the progress bar moves but there is no sound. The problem is not my speakers or the file, because I can open the same exact file in VLC and there is no problem. The problem is that I hate VLC and it doesn't do what I need to do. I need a music manager/library. Can anyone help me.

That's really strange. What distro are you using? If you are using Ubuntu try doing this in terminal:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
reboot and then see if it works
also try out Amarok, it's a great program
again assuming Ubuntu
sudo apt-get install Amarok
if you like it you can try out version 2 also, post and I can give instructions on it. I think 2 is even nicer than the 1.4 in the reposBodhi 1.3 & Bodhi 1.4 using E17
Dell Studio 17, Intel Graphics card, 4 gigs of RAM, E17

I'm wondering if this is a Pulse related thing. VLC by default will use ALSA directly. Perhaphs in other applications if you change the audio settings from their current or default settings and force ALSA, things will work again?

VLC uses which is default.
Which you have selected in Multimedia Systems Selector in preferences.
