As for the sound, I saw something about booting with the Live CD and copying an ALSA file to your desktop to later replace on the installed OS. I'm too tired to look for that tonight, maybe someone else will figure it out.

Just had an idea... last time this happened en masse it was a kernel related thing. On boot, does Grub give you options for different kernels to boot (May have to press ESC)? If so, try booting with the previous (older) kernel and see if your sound suddenly works again.

Hehe, that makes sense. I've been off-the-air for about a year until just before Christmas. I still had some net access at hotspots with a PSP, but I wasn't exactly playing with the latest Linux gadgets during that time frame! I think I've done okay playing catch-up, but little things like this are still bricking me in the head. :P

    do

    sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

that'll give you a lot more options for compiz, go to system->preferences->advanced desktop settings

Not that I'm aware of, but I could probably fake the desktop with JS code similar to the WinXP for PSP package. But, it wouldn't be real, so I personally wouldn't bother (someone else might want to take that up?).
