    GNOME Display manager isn't working

Hi, my GNOME Display manager also isn't working. When I try to run "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start" (or stop), it says "fail". When I try running 'startx', I get this:

    Code:
    Log File: "/var/log/xorg.0.log"
    Using config file: "etc/X11/xorg.conf"
config/hal: couldn't initialise context: (null) ((null))

Waiting for X server to shut down...

xauth: error in locking authority file /home/stephen/.Xauthority
It keeps on booting in to tty1, and I can't get to the graphical display screen. I also tried "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg". All this started to happen when I was trying to install mysql-query-browser and mysql-gui-tools, while mysql was running. After these programs were installed, I tried running one of them but nothing happened, I also tried to run the synaptic package manager but nothing happened, so I went to tty1 and did 'sudo shutdown -r now'. After the computer rebooted, from there it kept on booting into tty1 as it is now. Any ideas? Thanks!

A couple of things to try: do (from inside your home directory):
    Code:
    ls -l .Xauthority
Does it report you are the owner and it is in group "users?" If not, then do:
    Code:
    sudo chown stephen:users .Xauthority
If that doesn't work you can try making a new one:
    Code:
    sudo mv .Xauthority .Xauthority~
relog into X to create a new .Xauthority, (and hopefully at the same time, solve the problem).

I tried that and the .authority error disappeared but gdm still won't start. Here is the logfile that resulted from 'startx':

    I tried to reconfigure gdm:

    $ sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm

    Code:
    * Reloading GNOME Display Manager configuration...
    * Changes will take effect when all current X sessions have ended.
invoke-rc.d: initscript gdm, action reload failed.

    Is this you? Link
I'm researching this for you and from what I can tell it seems to be a bug with HAL. see the error in your log with (EE) beside it. Check out all these... Link
The log you posted... we can't see the end of it. Are there other errors at the end? Look for the lines with (EE) beside them and post them here please if there are any more.

Thanks Dapper Dan, yeah that's me. The log I posted was the entire log that resulted from 'startx'"

    Code:
    (==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.0.log", Time: Sun Feb 15 18:59:28 2009
    (==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.cofn"
(EE) config/hal: couldn't initialise context: (null) ((null))

waiting for X server to shut down .
that was all the errors that showed up.

Even though it is installed, try:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install hal

Post the contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf file here.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

    xorg.conf:

    Code:
    # xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
    #
    # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
    # values from the debconf database.
    #
    # Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
    # (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
    #
    # This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
    # if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
    # package.
    #
    # Note that some configuration settings that could be done previously
    # in this file, now are automatically configured by the server and settings
    # here are ignored.
    #
    # If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
    # again, run the following command:
    # sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
