No sound in ubuntu 8.10

I am not able to receive any sound output on my HP laptop. Installed ubuntu 8.10 recently

Execute alsamixer command in Terminal and check if all sliders are up and not muted.

This is the output i got from alsamixer. Doesn't seem to do any good

# cat /proc/asound/card

EDIT:

also check for snd devices

# ls -al /dev/snd/
