    [SOLVED] Internet suddenly stopped working

My internet connection stopped working. I'm running Intrepid Ibex, fully up to date, and I've verified that the problem is on my end. When I hooked up another computer to the same ethernet jack and let it connect with the same settings (DHCP, everything automatic) it succeeded.

It's also not a hardware problem with this computer. When I boot from a Hardy Heron LiveCD, I can connect to the internet the same way, and it works.

The network manager reports that I'm successfully connecting to the network, and ifconfig confirms that I have a correct IP address assigned. DNS lookups fail for me, and my /etc/resolv.conf file doesn't list any nameservers.

This didn't happen right after a software update; it happened while I was doing simple web browsing. I have two ethernet NICs in my computer, one a card and one integrated on my motherboard, and both of them fail to work.

    Any ideas?

Never mind; I fixed the problem. In case anybody else runs into this, I'll detail how.

When I tried to look at /etc/resolv.conf, I got errors about a bad NFS file handle. This was odd, since I don't run anything NFS related. So I ran fsck and it fixed a bunch of errors, and this fixed resolv.conf, which allowed the DNS services on my machine to work once again. Hooray!

Moral of the story: try running fsck once in a while. It can help.
