more display problems
i just installed ubuntu 8.04 over 7.1 and my display is stuck at 800x600. i can select 1600x1200, but all that seems to do is double the size of my desktop so that i have to mouse over in each direction to find the edge of the desktop.
i am using a geforce 6100 onboard GPU. i also have a geforce8300 gs pci-e card in there that ubuntu recognizes but that card seems to get stuck at 640x480.
if i can get this fixed i will never have to run windows again!

Hi and Welcome !
Have you installed Proprietary driver through Hardware Drivers option in Menu?It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

yes, i have
sorry it took me so long to respond... i have activated and de-activated the nvidia drivers in "hardware drivers" several times. also, i have tried numerous other commands in the terminal that i found in other threads. so at this point it would probably be good if i could return to my original settings and go from there. i am new to ubuntu and linux in general so i am pretty clueless. as of right now i know for sure that i have enabled the nvidia-glx-new package in hardware drivers... please help...

Your card is set up in nVidia's expanded desktop mode; basically, the resolution you chose is being stretched past the max resolution X thinks your monitor can handle.
This can be caused by either your monitor not being defined in xorg.conf, or if your card supports it, the S-video output is activated.
I'm still working on figuring out the peculiarities of xorg.conf in Ubuntu, but if you post the contents of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf, one of us might be able to spot a setting that would fix the issue.

I notice 3 things.
1) There appears to be two physical cards defined, are you running two monitors, or is just one card in use? We may need extra tools to deal with this one.
2) You're using the built-in "nv" driver. Try enabling the manufacturer (restricted) driver for nVidia in the hardware devices panel.
3) If upgrading your driver doesn't work, there's the line in Section "Screen" that says Modes "800x600" . This should be modified to read your monitor's maximum resolution. Manually editing requires root privileges. [Alt + F2], gksu gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

i have only one monitor connected. i am currently plugged into my onboard video (geforce 6100)
but i also have a pci-e geforce 8300gs in there, too. i should have probably removed it before install, but i didn't think about it...
i have tried plugging my monitor (samsung syncmaster 930b) into the pci-e graphics card but that one seemed to get stuck at 640x460...
i am going to shut down and remove that pci-e card and see if that helps...
where is the (restricted )driver? the only one in my Hardware Drivers is "nvidia-glx-new" should there be another one?

After changing video hardware, you want to run
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
as instructed in the xorg.conf. This will rebuild the file to match current hardware. Restart X after (you can just log out and back in).
That looks to be right. After activating, it should download the nVidia driver (if it hadn't already) and modify the xorg.conf to use it. This change will be noted when Driver "nv" is replaced by Driver "nvidia" in xorg.conf as it has done for one of your cards already in the new conf. (let the hardware manager do this, manually specifying this without the driver actually present will prevent X from loading.) I don't know if dpkg-reconfigure will reset the driver back to nv or keep nvidia, but it's easy to check. You may not need to do any further reconfiguration after."nvidia-glx-new"
Straight out otherwise, this looks like it should work.
