Video flashes red
Randomly, the video coming out of my Kaffeine (watching TV) flashes red a lot, even when on visualisation mode. I can make it stop only by luck or making it fullscreen.
ffplay or mplayer does this too sometimes.
I'm confused. Can someone help determine the cause?
Environment: Ubuntu 8.10 amd64, with KDE 4.2

Just a guess, are 3D Desktop Effects enabled? That might explain why it does that in a player window and not in full screen.
Could just be another KDE4 bug too (doubt it, but it wouldn't come to surprise me).

I've come to hate some features of it...
Could be, but it doesn't explain why it just started happening randomly. And stopped, and started.... I have no Compiz enabled, but KWin is at default.... and that's got transparency....

I have heard of flickering occuring when a window with transparency is being moved or is located over the video object, but usually not any other time. It should not be happening randomly.
Unfortunately, beyond this I'm probably not much help. Outside of WINE, I've never had video flickering problems in linux. Now flash video locking firefox solid when exiting the page....
Q: Is there any kind of predictable time delay associated with this? I'm wondering if there might be interference from powersave settings. If there is, you can try changing the kPowerSave applet to "Presentation."

Which Graphics Card do you have? Which driver are you using for Graphics Card?
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Yes I am, it's the only way but it seemed to work before. Anyway, I've completely reinstalled Kubuntu and it's fine now!
Did I get hacked? Firefox and random files kept disappearing (getting killed or segfaulting, never found out which)]
Does Kubuntu 8.10 have an exploit? It may have been that I had 2.6.27-7 for a while or ran lots of Wine apps (Wine has access to my home folder, next time NO WAY!)
I have tried VLC, I don't like it much...
- 02-23-2009 #9There isn't any exploit in Kubuntu but if you are running wine as root user then there could be problem.Did I get hacked? Firefox and random files kept disappearing (getting killed or segfaulting, never found out which)]

Check the size of your /home/folder. Anything suspicious?
Are you using 32bit or 64bit OS?It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

No running stupid things as root.. except Firestarter but I know that needs it. Maybe someone exploited a hole in that...
I'm on 64-bit.
And I couldn't tell if there's anything suspiciously large, I'll have a look.... seeing as I have huge files anyway... though I did spot a few things that I did not know what they were for..like clear-view files, not hidden ones.
Also when doing a fsck, there seemed to be a file "..." in my /home partition (very suspicious) that was "multiply-linked" or something to /home/dan/.nvidia-settings-rc. It may have been hiding .... but it's been fixed
EDIT: Aaaagh! The flashing is back! Could it be something to do with the mix of kernel and NVIDIA driver? (2.6.27-11 and 180.22)
I will get the newest kernel some time soon. The Ubuntu ones have never been very good. 2.6.26-2.6.27 were broken altogether, I had to put "hpet=disable" on the append options all the time for it to even start.Last edited by dandart; 02-23-2009 at 07:18 PM.
