edit your "default" value in grub.conf/menu.lst of mandriva installation.
(value starts from 0)

Open /boot/grub/menu.lst file and count title lines. Set default value to Ubuntu title line number. Start count from zero.
In case you have any confusion, post the contents of /boot/grub/menu.lst file here.It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
