The problem is much less severe now and I've realized that it actually starts after an action is taken (such as opening a pdf, rotating the cube in compiz-fusion, etc...) I don't think that it's any one program in particular but it does just randomly start. I have checked refresh rates and they seem to be fine....again the problem is much less severe now but if anyone has any suggestions (I thought about posting a video to show what the flickering/blinking looks like, if that will help I can get one up. Thanks all
I am having the same problem with a Dell Precision T3400 using a NVidia FX 1700 card and dual head DVI monitors. after use for a bit the monitors will blink off (quickly) every 5-10 seconds progressively getting worse. If I leave the system alone for a bit the frequency slows down but builds back up under load.

Curious if the card may be jumping between DVI-D and DVI-A or something. It is really annoying!

    Any help would be appreciated!

*edit* forgot to add that I am runnign on UBUNTU 8.10 and have tried 1.73, 1.78 and 1.80 nvidia drivers
