Can not download acroread in ubuntu 8.04

For the last three days I have been trying to download acroread through the synaptic package manager without any success.

Sorry to have started this thread. I went to the adobe website and saw that it would take 2 and 1/2 hours to download their pdf viewer. I found out that there is a gnome pdf viewer called Evince.

Then I discovered that Evince was in the synaptic package manager and already installed.

There is something amiss I'm sad to say. I have attempted to also use the synaptic package manager to download w32codecs. The download reaches seven percent and then goes back to zero over and over again. The same thing happened with the acroread download.

There must be a reason this keeps happening. I used the package manager yesterday to download and install gparted and libdvdcss2 so it works sometimes.

Sounds like you are dropping a connection cousinlucky. Try installing w32codecs during non peak hours is all I can think of. Have you ever checked with your neighbors and see if anybody in your building or block uses a free wireless access point. Maybe all you need to do to go faster is buy a wireless PCI Card and hook up . Just a thought. I just bought one of these to show you whatt I mean. Rokytnji, I will have to look up the things that you mentioned because I am not familiar with them.
Everything else that I tried to download worked just fine. I tried downloading acroread overnight but it would not go past 12% before returning to zero. Are there RPM's for Unbuntu codecs?

To install RPMs into a Debian type distro You will need to install Alien. I don't know if it's a good idea or not but googling should provide an answer. Don't know about rpm to much cousin lucky. Maybe somebody else will chip in and provide answer.

Better to use the .deb files (the debian (apt) base equivlent to rpms).

If you take note of the package file name (and that of any dependencies that were automatically added), you can download the files separately via a download manager (preferably one that supports resume) right from the Ubuntu archives; I think gwget comes available on Ubuntu (it's an easy D/l of 220K - 500K depending on what's already installed, 5 minutes on a good dial-up).

Once the files are downloaded, a doubble-click should start dpkg install, or you can use dpkg from the command line to install.

At 4:50AM this morning the w32codecs download stopped at 16% and a little icon appeared at the very top of my monitor. It said:

    Fluendo Codecs Purchase Information

Thank you for installing documention for the various codecs provided by Fluendo. You will find the documentation in /usr/share/doc/fluendo
Please note, this package does NOT install any codecs itself. If you'd like to purchase them, please visit the Canonical Store at:
Canonical Store - Complete Codec Pack
Canonical Store - Windows Media and MP3 Codec Pack

At least now I know why this download never finishes.

I downloaded all of the gstreamer programs in the package manager to see if that would help.
