Hit the default device button on the audio and see if your audio out/in is listed. If it is, manually choose it.
It doesn't look like Skype sees your video rig, what are you using?

do you mean like this? I selected them all but none tests with/without headset.

I think the audio type is ALSA PCM as it says when I open the volume control.

Regarding the web cam, I downloaded / installed "cheese" but do not know how to run it. in Ubuntu let alone in Skype .........nick

    So it sees the hardware.
Take the "let skype automatically set mixer levels" off and run alsaconf. Make sure your unmuted. You probably did that already, but check again. Sometimes programs reset the values in alsoconf for no explainable reason (I know of).

my mistake, Niccho, it's alsamixer instead of alsaconf
A trick is to type "alsa" at the command line and hit tab, bash will show you all the commands that begin "alsa". If you're not sure what they do. just type "man the-command-in-question" and it will give you more info on it.
On the skype->options menu under sound thier is an checkbox for skype to set the defaults on your mixer, remove that check box and run alsamixer. Make sure your not muted.
My apologees for the earlier mistake (alsaconf), let me know what you find when you run alsacmixer.
