Should I update to ubuntu 8.10?

The update manager in my ubuntu 8.04 os is requesting that I upgrade to ubuntu 8.10. I just installed the 8.04 and have not even got used to it yet. Am I going to have to update or keep from using the update manager? Will the new update wipe out everything in the older version?

I have had wireless configurations wiped by updates.

Get familiar with your configurations, settings, update/package installations/history, etc., THEN, before updating, be prepared to restore in the event of accident'. It happens ALL THE TIME - check out the threads in Ubuntu forums about this...

It wont wipe, but it may leave with some bugs.

    If you havent installed anything.
    Just install 8.10 with 8.10 live/alternate cd.
because update will nearly download the same amount on data. around 600-700 MB.
    Never make any misteaks.

You don't need to upgrade. You can, but you don't have to.

I suggest you just stay with 8.04 because it's an LTS. I still work with 8.04 as well and I don't miss anything.

    I agree with Bemk.

8.04 will be supported for far longer than 8.10 so you will continue to get all the security updates and patches long after 8.10 will necessitate another upgrade.

The only upside to upgrading is that some of the software will be newer. If you are happy with what you have got then why not stick with it.

I am very happy with 8.04, so far, and i see why so many people recommend Ubuntu for former windows users. I was just leery of being forced to upgrade.

I agree, wait for 10.04 before you upgrade, which will be the next long term support release, which will come in april 2010

On my desktop PC, I updated from 8.04 LTS to 8.10 and it completely messed up my Ubuntu install.

So my advice is also to stick with 8.04 and you won't go wrong.

What I don't understand is, I have 8.04 and I'm not being prompted to upgrade to 8.10.

If you want to stop it offering the upgrade follow these steps.

Click System -> Administration -> Software Sources
    Click the Updates Tab
Change "Show new distribution release" from "Normal Releases" to "Never"
    Click Close

I've set that setting to LTS only, so I will get notified once the next LTS is released.
