    I cant boot from usb

Hello, this is the first time I am trying to use linux and I would be very grateful for some help! I tried to install ubuntu 8.10 on my 4Gb usb stick, in order to boot from there, without affecting my hard disk. At first I used a live cd and when this failed I used unetbootin-windows-32.exe. The problem each time was that when I rebooted the system, ubuntu would load up to a point and then the process would stop and the following would appear on my screen: "Busy Box v1.10.2 (ubuntu 1:1.10.2-1ubuntu) built in shell (ash) enter help for a list of built in commands. initramfs
However everything works smoothly whenever I boot from the live CD.
Could someone please explain what it is that I am doing wrong?? thank you in advance.
