graphics driver not configured
hey How do I install my graphics driver in Ubuntu 8.10? Its a intel 82865g graphics.
I showed my xorg.conf to a guy and he told me that my driver is either not installed or is not configured or detected
here's the content of my xorg.conf
help me out.. When I change my resolution my display turns off and I cant do anything. but when I restart the resolution has changed and in the System->Preferrencces->Screen Resolution I get a "Unknown" logo displayedCode:# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file) # # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using # values from the debconf database. # # Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page. # (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.) # # This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only* # if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg # package. # # Note that some configuration settings that could be done previously # in this file, now are automatically configured by the server and settings # here are ignored. # # If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated # again, run the following command: # sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg Section "Device" Identifier "Configured Video Device" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "Configured Monitor" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Default Screen" Monitor "Configured Monitor" Device "Configured Video Device" EndSection
so I guess my driver is not configured please help me out
Ubuntu is too slow, I'm dual booting and WinXP is far efficient than Ubuntu it is bloated.
I think its because of the graphic driver not configured.....

Ubuntu tries to configure Graphics Card, Resolutions and Refresh rates itself but its not working fine in your machine.
Edit xorg.conf file manually and add necessary values.
Check your Monitor's Manual for supported Resolutions and Refresh rates ( HorizSync and VertRefresh ).
This is xorg.conf file of one of my box. Edit it according to your Monitor's Manual.
"i810" is a driver for Intel Graphics Cards. In case it doesn't work, replace it with "vesa".
Code:Section "Device" Identifier "Configured Video Device" Driver "i810" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "Generic Monitor" Option "DPMS" HorizSync 30-71 VertRefresh 50-160 EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Default Screen" Device "Configure Vedio Card" Monitor "Generic Monitor" DefaultDepth 24 SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" EndSubSection EndSection Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "Default Layout" Screen "Default Screen" InputDevice "Generic Keyboard" InputDevice "Configured Mouse" EndSection
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

I installed ubuntu 8.04 a couple of weeks ago and it did not detect my Via graphics card hence my monitors resolution was way off. As advised here, I replaced the ubuntu X11 file with the X11 file from my suse 10 os and my problem was solved.
Below is the file from my suse 10 os for you to look at:
