    one big internet mess

Hi, I am at uni and they only let me register one mac address. I bought a router and gave them the routers mac address (should this work?). Now to where i am. I bought a wireless belkin g router. I tried to install the software cd(using wine) and could only get past the first couple of stages before the window closes. it does not get past the stage where it attempts to contact the router. The "internet" light is never on during this process, although every other relevant one is. Would a different distro help? or perhaps a different router?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You generally don't actually need the install CD to set up a router. Assuming your wireless is working under Ubuntu, you should be able to connect to the router, if not the internet, and log in to set it up. Or connect via an ethernet cable. The default address for Belkin, I think, it 192.168.2.1, which you just type into your url bar in a web browser. Generally, in your router documentation it should tell you the correct address if that does't work, and the default username and password. (Often just admin/admin.) Or you can google your model and should be able to find the info you need. Once you're logged in, there is often a setup wizard you can access from there, or it's not hard to figure out a basic setup by hand, especially if you're just using DHCP.
