    Screen Resolution Bug

I have been burning up my alone time trying to make something practical of the the Ubuntu 8.1 installation for the past two weeks now. I love nag-free computing, and the web connection and sound work, although not all types of connections are working right out of the box. Flash video installation was tedious, and the quality doesn't seem quite the same, but the nasties problem which I've encountered was Ubuntu's own screen resolution tool.

Apparently, 1600x1024 is not a good choice for an Acer standard wide screen - unlike with other options presented under System->Preferences-> Screen Resolution, this one caused my screen to go dark, and the menus all disappeared (score 1 for Microsoft, at least they provide escape options)! I booted into Repair mode, but none of the options presented had any effect when I tried them, and without being able to find any simple command-line fixes, I was forced to do a clean install. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

Display resolutions and refresh rates are configured in /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. You can edit that file in command line mode and set supported resolutions.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Also for future reference, the X server does have hotkeys for raising and lowering resolution on the fly,
    [Ctrl + Alt + +] and [Ctrl + Alt + -] respectively.
