    VirtualBox failed to launch

I installed virtualbox 2.1.2 but failed to load with the complaints that the virtualbox linux kernel driver failed to load. I ran /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup as a root but to no avail. this occured after successfully creating a virtual machine and installing windows xp.

What is the exact error message you see after trying to run VirtualBox? Which version of Ubuntu are you running? In versions of Ubuntu previous to 8.10 i sometimes had to manually update the virtual box drivers in synaptic after a kernel update.

uninstall virtualbox 2.1.2 go to Downloads - VirtualBox
and download (install) virtualbox 2.1.4 your virtual machines will work the same as on virtualbox 2.1.2 buth you wil have the latest version with OpenGL support.
It is possible that it will solve your kernel problem if not try /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup again.
    have funn

that's strange that /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup didn't solve your problem. Do you have kernel options during Grub menu? If so select the old kernel and try to run VB
