The terminology may differ slightly between the distros but your saying you can't switch between desktops 1through X? Alt+F1, Atl+F2 , that kind of thing?
What session manager are you using? (Gnome, KDE, XFCE, Fluxbox, )

If you have lost the icon you can right click on the panel and select add to panel. Then pick "Workspace switcher". You may have reset the keyboard shortcuts so I'd check they are still correct as well.

okay, the issue is that the workspace switcher doesnt work. I added a new one and it still doesnt work. I clicked the other workspace but it didnt switch.

Look in gnome configuration. Somewhere in there it asks how many desktops (workspaces) you want, you can get up to16 of them with some distroes. It's probably set to 1 and that's why your having this problem

    Try
    Alt +2
    or Ctrl+2
    or Alt+F2
    or F2
    Alt right arrow
    Ctrl right arrow
They almost always have a keyboard shortcut to switch them. It'll be easier to fix if we know whether or not it's a the x-server not making them or a problem with the controls in userspace.

    Gnome Project
    # Press Ctrl+Alt+right arrow to switch to the workspace on the right of the current workspace.
    # Press Ctrl+Alt+left arrow to switch to the workspace on the left of the current workspace.
