    Video Flicker

    I've been running Ubuntu for a few weeks now, but all of a sudden any .avi file I open flickers, from the movie to an all black or checkered screen. The sound is fine, just the video does not seem to work. I tried using both Totem and Mplayer movie player, but they both don't work. I had watched dozens of other .avi files over the past weeks and they worked fine, but now they all flicker.

    If you're using compiz as a window manager try switching to metacity and playing a video. You'll probably find the problem stops. The easy way of switching to metacity is by going into system > preferences > appearances > visaul effects and selecting "none".

    If there's no video flicker on this appearance setting then you can keep your fancy effects by installing compiz fusion icon (which you can find in the add/remove programs utility) and adding it to the start up processes by going to system > preferences > sessions and clicking "add program" (might be phrased differently, I'm working from memory) and in the "command" field enter "fusion-icon" (without the quotes).

    You'll then notice on restart that there's a blue icon in your taskbar, which you can right click on to easily switch your window manager to metacity when you want to watch a video, and back to compiz when you're done.

    (Sorry if I spelled everything out too much - I have a policy of writing all posts as simply as possible so that if a person new to Linux were to stumble across them they'll be able to understand).
