My connection is solid, so is it a problem with the server?

The guide didn't seem to mention updating your repository. My guess is there is a new version in the repos and synaptic is searching for the old version. There's an option to update the repos in synaptic or from the command line type: sudo apt-get update

just a warning, if this is your first time installing KDE on top of Ubuntu, make sure to use a different user name....if you use the same one you'll probably end up getting problems...it's usually not suggested to install KDE on top of Ubuntu like this...but I've found that installing it and setting up a KDE only user works well enough (you might also want to check out virtualbox and just install Kubuntu inside of it, if what you want is to try out KDE)
    Bodhi 1.3 & Bodhi 1.4 using E17
Dell Studio 17, Intel Graphics card, 4 gigs of RAM, E17

So, my best bet is to create a new account and use that for kde, or install kubuntu?

I'll try that, and updating my repositories.
