XP and Linux at the same time
Hi
I am running Ubuntu and need to run XP on Linux because there are some programs I really need which only can be used by windows.
I've been trying it with Virtualbox OSE but it won't just work for me. I've been looking for solutions all day every day but I just don't get it. Could anyone tell me another program I could manage that? plus I'm new to these linux stuff ... I've just installed it 3 days ago.
Hope any1 can help me out.

Welcome to the forums Raider123
If you really need to run Windows XP applications then I suggest you setup dual boot ... install XP first, then install Linux. If you are using Ubuntu make sure you select a partitioning option to keep Windows - the default uses the whole disk for Linux.
I have got Windows 2000, XP, Vista and 7 to work in VirtualBox but that is on Arch Linux (VirtualBox PUEL version) - setup should be fairly similar. Keep in mind you will have reduced performance in a VM & a few applications will not access hardware correctly.
- 03-07-2009 #3Do you mean it does not have the functionality you require or that it doesn't run at all(couldn't install it, crashes,etc...)Did you try the proprietary version of Virtualbox? It has USB support, as well as a few extra features.I've been trying it with Virtualbox OSE but it won't just work for me.
There is also VMware available for Linux. As well as XEN, KVM and Qemu, but I have only tried Virtyalbox and VMware.

Thanx for the info guys.
I installed and configured VirtualBox with help of a tutorial.
When I now try to install XP on it, I get something like an error:

okay, I don't know what I need to select but I created a new Hard Disk.
Now it looks like:
Hard Disks:
IDE Primary Slave - NewHardDisk1.vdi [Normal, 2.00GB]
but I still get the same error

Stop the VM, go to settings with the VM selected and select hard disks ... you need to add the hard disk to the VM. After that run the VM with the CD mounted and run through the install process.

Where can I add the hard disks? Do you know the paths of them? I don't know it, because Linux looks much different than windows.
I think it should be "Computer". i just clicked on / but then there appear many other windows.

Creating a VM should be fairly straight forward, you should find tutorials for doing this, search the VirtualBox help for creating a virtual machine ... it gives a step by step guide.
