did you install from a .deb a .run or from source code? ... which section did you download from? and which version did you install?

it was a deb which makes it even weirder that it's not in synaptic and when I try to do sudo apt-get remove VirtualBox it says no installed (but I can run VirtualBox by typing in just that in terminal)

Have you checked to see if the .run script that installed it might have an "uninstall" option? If not, then check on the Sun/VirtualBox web site for help with this. I always use the .rpm or .deb files to install (depending upon the platform) so the package manager can uninstall it later.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
