Cant log on plz help!!

i have Ubuntu set up so that when i switch on my computer i can either choose Windows XP Proffesional or Ubuntu. Windows XP works fine and when I click on Ubuntu everything loads with no fails, but here's the problem I type in my username and password and it freezes i've left it for hours but nothing happens I just have to switch my computer off at the wall.

Is there another user automatically there that i can try to log on to?
Is there something i can do on Windows XP to fix it?
Or am I stuck.

Try logging in as root. Did you set the system up to give a login prompt for username/pwd when you installed?
Usually Ubuntu won't ask for a login unless you have set up users.

Press Alt+Ctrl+F1. Does it drop you at Command Line Login prompt?
Which Graphics Card do you have?

I did set up a username and password, but when i type them in the system crashes.

I pressed Alt+Ctrl+F1 and it took me to a command login prompt. I then typed in my password and it made a sound (probably the login sound, i dunno???) but I cant get back out of the command prompt, i tried typing in exit but the screen went black.


I have a "Intel(R) Extreme Graphics" graphics card

Ive reinstalled Ububtu and now instead of freezing at the login screen it drops me at a command line which starts with Grub when i hit enter. Do i need to reinstall it again!!!! or is there something I can type to bring me to the login screen. I've never used Ubuntu before so I don't know anything about it anything will be helpful.
