This is the screen I see when I type in alsamixer -c0.. It was indeed originally at PulseAudio. I still get no sound....

What are the "Analog L..."s and what happens if you unmute them?

Left and Right arrows select the item, up and down arrows adjust level, and the "m" button toggles mute.

    Sorry for the delayed post..

When I unmute both the Analogs it shows no volume value or volume bar, so I'm tempted to say they don't mean much of anything

    This is frustrating!!

Don't expect a bar to appear, they're switches, just on or off. If there's no audio while they're on (unmuted), then that's probably not the problem, but it was worth checking out before diving into the lower levels of the sound system.

I'm not sure PulseAudio is the culprit here, but I'd like to eliminate it as a possibility, so first I'd suggest following the linked instructions. If you don't have sound after reboot, at least we'll know you're running a stable sound server.

Just followed these steps and still have no sound..

I really hope I'm not missing something here--I've tried every option given to me in the sound preferences as well as the volume mixer, testing each individually, and I still get nothing!

Could something maybe have been messed up in the transition from Vista over to Ubuntu?

Again, thank you for all your help, I seriously appreciate it.

I just read some interesting things... question, if you plug in headphones or external speakers, does the sound work?

YES!!! It does indeed work with headphones plugged in.. That's awesome.

I know beggars can't really be choosers, but is there anyway to get this working through the laptop's external speakers?

    Thank you!!!

if you're up for recompiling ALSA from "snapshot" source.

Edit: I suggest making the alsa-base edit with nano instead of vim... vim is not an easy editor to use (efficient for experienced programmers, but cumbersome to many others).
