    Unhappy X-server and Freevo

I have a working Ubunto box with Intrepid Ibex, but I am new to this. I want to set up Freevoand have been directed to QuickStartGuide - Freevo 1.x Wiki. This says the first pre-requisite is a working X-Server. What is an X-Server. When I searched on the Freevo wiki it got no hits. A search on Google brought lots of hits, mostly for windows products that seemed to be trying to look like Linux, so does my Ubuntu box already have X-server, and if so how do I turn it on.

The quick start guide to Freevo installation seems to be giving me windows type instructions, i.e. download the package and install it. In my innocence I already et up Freevo using the synaptic package manager, and this seemed to go well. The installed package does not run, however. In fact it does nothing. Is this because i did not have an X-server before installation, or possibly just because i don't have one now. Do I have to ignore the synaptic package manager and do things the long way.

All help will be greatly appreciated

X Server provides Graphical User Interface. It runs by default in Ubuntu and all distros having Graphical Interface.
I have never used Freevo. Could you post the link of Freevo wiki you are refering to?

    Continued

Hi again, I should have said, Ubuntu is running fine, GUI and all, so I must have X Server. That means I must have some other problem. One of the things the documentation says is that X-server should be running at 800 x 600. Does this mean I should reset teh screen resolution, or something more basic.

Before I uninstall it all and try to do it their way could you please comment on the manual install versus the Synaptic Package Manager. I am very new at this and not overly confident of my abilities. I will probably get there in the end, however. My first problem will be what they mean by @install'. They make it sound like a windows install, i.e. click on the exe.

    Thanks

    Continued..............

I just reset the screen resolution to 800 x 600 and all that happened is that it now looks revolting. Freevo still doesn't run.

    That's no link, buddy!

When you have to post a link, copy what is there in the addressbar (where we type website names like gmail.com) and then paste them here. Have tried doing that for you. Just confirm if that is the same link.

    That was the link

    Hi again

Thanks, your link was what I meant. I cut and pasted it from another source, not the actual web site. Not quite sure what broke it, but yours was right.
