install ubuntu on dual boot
Hey all, this is my first post. So my first question is I currently have Fedora 7 and windows XP on a dual boot on my laptop. While I was on Fedora, I made a mistake and typed 'yum install yum' and ever since that time, anytime I try and install something using yum it says that it is currently being used by another application. I tried kill # and it didn't work. So I have decided to erase Fedora and install Ubuntu on that partition. Can someone help me out with the process on how to do that? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forums!
When you go to install Ubuntu, you need to direct the installer to utilize the partitions that Fedora resides on. The installer should format those partitions and install Ubuntu on them. You shouldn't have to erase Fedora, but let the Ubuntu installer take care of it.oz

Now I will need to download it and then make a startup CD right? How do I direct the installer?

Before you begin the install run the fdisk command to get partition information.
sudo fdisk -l
This will tell you which partitions have Fedora and which have xp. After you begin the installation, you will have an option to do a manual install or choose expert wherein you will be able to select the partitions to use. If you use the default, it will probably overwrite everything. Haven't installed Ubuntu for a while so not sure about the exact terminology you will see.
