Unknown password on second-hand netbook
I have today bought a second hand Toshiba NB100, using Ubuntu Remix. Unfortunately, the previous owner has password protected the user account - so System changes are impossible at the moment although the machine seems to function well otherwise.
Please explain if I can overcome this problem without re-installing the System software from the CD that comes with the machine.
Thank you

This is one way to go about it. I'm sure other members will show you another way also.
If you select "Ubuntu Recovery Mode" in the bootup menu, it will boot you to a terminal with root access without prompting for a password.
Then use the command "passwd userName" to set a new password for yourself. Obviously, userName is your username.Linux Registered User # 475019

Many thanks to each of you. I have followed your directions and seemed to have deleted the previous user details. As a new Linux user I am finding things very tricky but I will keep trying. Regards.
