Kmix does not appear on my panel. Intrepid 64bit KDE 4.2
I am missing several icons on my panel. Kmix is the most missed icon. My headset does not work properly. I believe that settings in the mixer might cure my problem, however, I do not have the speaker on my panel. I don't know how to use a shell to get the mixer to appear either. Thanks for any help you may provide.

Kmix is not in the panel. RESOLVED BUT NOT IN THE BEST WAY.
When I clicked on reply, I did not realize the title would not be in the return, so I can't remember the exact title. I have tried what you suggest many times. I have tried so many different approaches that I have repeated myself many times. Whatever was wrong has exhausted the knowledge of the readers. On other forums, it has not worked either. Your response is the most common. Yesterday, out of frustration with this and other seemingly unresolvable problems, I formatted and installed Jaunty. By the way, it is just terrific.
One of the unsolvable problems with the old OS and desktop was that kmail would no longer work and it was configures perfectly. I for one copied the previous working configuration, then read a hundred emails from people with a cure that would not work. Finally I installed Thunderbird so I could communicate again.
When I installed Jaunty, I thought I would try my preferred Kmail. It took about 15 seconds to configure and get running. That is due to Jaunty. What a phenomenal change. Also, my upgrade for the nVidia card was unbelievable. I thought the former video was pretty good; the new, with Jaunty, is so much better, I can't describe it. The clarity and 3D effects are so real you feel like you can put your hand right in the monitor. Thanks for trying to help; it is appreciated. I am sorry I made my decision just shortly after this post; I hate that I wasted your time. Thanks again friend.

No worries. Still sound weird though -- I wonder if it just wasn't installed? There still seem to be loads of oddities in all the 64bit versions...I'm still on 32bit with KDE3.5 for now...

OTKmix does not appear on my panel. Intrepid 64bit KDE 4.2
This is off topic, but the problem is resolved. I just appreciated your attempt to help and thought you might want to hear about my experience with Jaunty. I got lucky and have a quad-core with goodies, but the best thing I got was Jaunty. It is light-years better than any before. And at least on my box, it is much more stable than intrepid or hardy. It is so good it is likely to put Microsoft out of the OS business. I heard that it would be 100% gui before released. That makes it heads on with Microsoft, and Microsoft doesn't have the Linux technology. Even the Glitzy features are very useful. Some go a little over the top, but some pretty fancy stuff just out performs the utility of the competition. When I opened Jaunty, I thought I would give kmail another chance. It is my preference. Anyway entering POP and SMTP and a click and it was configured and working, all of 15 seconds. Everything is like that. My MB is one of the high end variety with the nVidia 780a chip. It is an ASUS M3N-HT Deluxe Mempipe. I heard about all the bugs. Not anymore.
Open hardware click on 180.37 driver upgrade, and instantly you have the best color, clearity and 3D effects I have ever experienced. It looked like you could put your hand right into the monitor. If you are waiting for stability, skip to the Alpha version of Jaunty. It is incredible.
One of the glitzy features is by putting your cursor in the upper left corner of the Desktop, (it doesn't matter if you have 20 open applications and I am a multi-tasker) it zooms out until each open package fits on the screen not overlapping. If ever you have had 7 or 8 open programs and the one you want is hidden, instantly you can glance and see the one you want on top, click on it and continue working. For me, that feature is worth the program, because of the work it saves. There is another feature that looks nonsensical. A couple of eyes on the screen. I put one set upper right corner of the desktop and one on the lower left. The pupils follow the mouse, so if you are in the middle of a large document correcting something and the telephone rings, you come back to white with black print and have to search for the cursor. You move the mouse to make it easier, and by doing so lose your place on the sheet. Then you have to remember what you were fixing and go find it.
When I come back from an interruption like that, I look at the two sets of eyes. Both are looking at the cursor, so it only takes a moment to triangulate to the place on the sheet. You don't have to move the mouse just to find it, and you don't have to lose your place doing so. You don't have think about what you were fixing and you don't have to read the entire document to find it. That is a glitz feature that saves 5 to 10 minutes every time you use it. I have the temperature my processor at a glance. If you want to hear more, stevenvollom@sbcglobal.net. Of course, I have 8gb of memory, so that may be a factor. I haven't been memory short for anything so maybe it would use too much memory on another box. But in my situation It is just plain terrific. I hope I didn't waste any of your time, but I am still very grateful for the help.
