[SOLVED] World of Warcraft Installer with Wine
Alright, here goes again with all mention of any "questionable" sites removed for the moderator's pleasure... -
Good Morning, all.
So, yesterday I decided to make the jump to Ubuntu (Intrepid Ibex). Backed up all of my music, wiped my hard drive, and started installing the essentials.
Got wine (most current version, I believe - as I've applied all available updates to my box) installed for World of Warcraft, however whenever I get to a point where I have to use the blizzard downloader, it crashes giving an alert box with no text. This has happened in two situations:
a) When I do the install from disk (where you copy all files from the disk to your hard drive and run the installer) I can get to the login screen, but as soon as the game attempts to update, I get the crash
b) When I try to do the full download from the blizzard site I get the crash.
Does anyone have any similar experience using the automated installer/patcher? Your help is highly appreciated.
Thanks

Thanks for the edit. Here are a few general WoW in Wine sites that might help:

I did see a few posts about your video configuration sometimes causing it to crash. It's something to look at.

From my experience, the blizzard downloader installer doesn't work with whatever ubuntu has in repository, you need to add the wine-hq repository, there are instructions on their site.

Thank you very much, both of you. From these posts I've got a list of three things I can try when I get home from work. I'll post what works in case someone else runs into the same problem. Here's what I'm trying:
- Add the missing windows fonts to Ubuntu (this solved a problem installing EVE Online about a year ago on my laptop)
- Add the missing windows .DLL's to wine
- Add the wine hq-repository

I was able to finish the install and log on this morning. It turns out I had to add the wine hq-repository.
Thank you for your help and ideas
