It depends on the file type,
.ppt and .opt presentations will run pretty cleanly from 97 thru XP in open office. XL, XLT, doc, rtf are beautiful, I exchange them with half a dozen organizations every day and they have no idea I'm not using a microsoft product to do so.
Docx, xlsx and the databases give me fits though, so here's how I handle them.
I have a windows hard drive that has 1 copy of office on it. I reboot, open office, pull down the file, save it in a usable format and put it back into the internal bin so everybody can access it. I then follow it up with a request that future correspondence use the industry standard extensions (.xls, .doc. etc.). It works well, if I have to boot the windows machine twice in a week, it's notable.

Take a look at how this guy does it...
I've also read that open office 3 will handle the xml in a docx or xlsx natively via Doxygen but for me at least keeping up with the latest iteration of MS Office isn't very high on my todo list.
This last forced upgrade may have broke the camels back for those guys, I don't see a lot of people using "docx" or "xlsx", primarily becaue they don't deliver any key functionality for the vast majority of users.

OK so I downloaded 00o_3.0.1_090128_linuxintel_install_deb.tar.gz for my Ubuntu 8.04 os
but the archive manager does not work with it. I get a message command line output. Does that mean that I downloaded the wrong download or does that mean I have to try and install it using the computers terminal??Linux registered user # 414321
