Upgrading Firefox???
What is the correct way to ugrade the version of Firefox I have?
What I mean is this. I can go to the Mozilla site and download a newer version. (am I correct in understanding the Updates manger or Add/Remove programs will just add updates to my pressent version 3b05 but not install a newrer version?
So I got to Mozilla and download. Do I then end up with the old one still on my system but just not in use or is it removed? I dont want to junk up with a bunch of redundant files.
Once installed will the update manager then notify me about updates for my new version?
Thanks for sorting me out on this

I don't use ubuntu, but I should imagine that there must be a repository on the debian or ubuntu sites that will give you the latest .deb upgrades.
Have you tried using the ubuntu upgrade tools and searching for firefox?
(Sorry don't have a spare pc to run the live dvd to check where it is.)
Also have a look at the ubuntu forums.
Only as a last resort use the .tbz file from mozilla - it needs a bit more than newbie basic linux to install.

If you originally installed firefox using ubuntu's package manager (or if it was initially installed on the system and you haven't touched it) then you will be prompted to update it along with all the other system updates depending on how often it is set to check for updates. It should be available once the "people that know" have compiled a package suitable for the various ubuntu versions and put it in the repository, so there can be a lag between availability from developer to being in the repository but this is generally the best way to run most of the software.
To update (in Intrepid Ibix, as this is what I know...) go to System - Administration - Update Manager, click on "Check" and then install any updates required by clicking "Install Updates". To change the automatic update settings go to System - Administration - Software Sources and click on the "Updates" tab, in the "Automatic Updates" box you have some options to choose.
I can confirm that the latest firefox (version 3.0.7) is currently in the repository (for Ibix anyway, as I say - that's what I'm on).
Hope this helps!
EDIT: One more thing, if you do download and install software from outside the repository it will NOT replace anything installed from the repository and so you may end up with two copies on your system. You will also not be reminded to update by the repository, and so will be "on your own": another reason why it's normally best to wait for the repository to be updated.

Thanks... Yes this last point was exactly what I was concerned about. I have the version which installed from the disk and have updated from the update manager. But I read all this talk about updateing such and such a version from the Mozilla site. Hence my question.

So all the various point releases for Firefox 3.0 will come out - they're on 3.07 currently, but I don't believe it would upgrade you to 3.1 when it's released. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. That said, even should it be the case, 3.1 would likely be backported for Intrepid. What I mean is this. I can go to the Mozilla site and download a newer version. (am I correct in understanding the Updates manger or Add/Remove programs will just add updates to my pressent version 3b05 but not install a newrer version?
