Most drivers are already included with the linux kernel.

If you need to install any drivers, use the default package tool for your distro to install them whenever possible. If the drivers can't be found in your distro repositories, you can install them from source. Check any readme files found in the decompressed folders/files for special instructions about installation.

You can check this HowTo for additional information on installing software under Linux:

You shouldn't need to install many drivers. What exactly are you trying to install?

thanks, i have a printer that will need installing, although from what you have said there may be a possibility of it working without the need for drivers other than in the linux.

Yes, your printer drivers might be preinstalled with your distribution. Some drivers come in the cups and foomatic-db packages which Ubuntu probably installs by default. Keep in mind that some printers don't work with Linux at all, at least at the current time.
