Gawd...
In gnome you would need to prevent nautilus from placing the wallpaper as your background, as it can only handle one wallpaper for all desktop views. having done that, you will then have to use the compiz settings manager to place a different wallpaper on your different desktops backgrounds.
Be warned, once compiz has taken control of the wallpaper rendering, you won't be able to use icons on your desktop - however their are work arounds to this. One is to use a happy with compiz dock to launch your most used applications from. I like cairo-dock myself, its in the repos so a
sudo apt-get install cairo-dock
will see you OK on that front. Also screenlets have (if memory serves) an applet that can help you to add more functionality back to your desktop
sudo apt-get install screenlets
So ok to be precise press alt-f2, then type gconf-editor, go to apps->nautilus->preferences in the gconf editor, and uncheck the show-desktop box.
Then in CompizConfig Settings Manager (ccsm), go to wallpaper and set the images for the wallpapers, one by one, enable and enjoy.
You can also place screenlets on a widget layer - you turn this on in ccsm. When you press F9 you can toggle the screenlets from hidden to visible. A little touch that I quite like.
