Unhappy Inves USB Wireless Adaptor and Ubuntu 8.10

    Subject: INVES USB wireless adaptor
    Quote Edit
Re: Inves USB Wireless Adapter 54mbps I am having a problem installing the driver for the above USB adapter. The manufactures web hotline tecnician says it should work out of the box with Ubuntu.
Although there seems to be a Linux driver on the CD disk that came with it, there are no instructions. There are two zipped files in the Linux folder The format is tar.tar. I am not sure why there is two tar but that is what appears. I am using Ubuntu 8.10 on an old Packard Bell Pentium 4 Laptop. If that is of any help. I am not sure if this is any help

was trying some code that I was reading on a forum to no avail but this was the result of iwconfig, in the terminal. Which to my very limited knowledge, would seem to say that the USB adaptor is recognised but just needs the driver. wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:"" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=27 dBm Retry min limit:7 RTS thrff Fragment thr=2352 B Power Managementff Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0 Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0 i When I open the Linux fold on the CD Disk I have two zip files. I am very inexperienced with Linux.

The USB adapter is being detected.

Please open a terminal and post the output of the following
    Code:
    dmesg | grep firmware
    and
    Code:
    lsmod

I'm a little at a loss. The manufacturer's tech was right, it should be supported out of the box. I was the one who directed you to this forum. Looking at your post from the other forum, lsmod did detect the zd1211rw driver before, but I'm not seeing it now. Was the wireless adapter plugged into your computer when you used "lsmod"? When you click on the networkmanager applet in the system tray (with the adapter plugged into your computer), is there an option to enable wireless? Does it detect any networks? Can you post the output of the following
    Code:
    sudo iwlist wlan0 scanning
(it will ask for you user password, FYI)

    This is the result;
    stephen@stephen-laptop:~$ sudo iwlist wlan0 scanning
    [sudo] password for stephen:
wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down

    stephen@stephen-laptop:~

Not sure if this is of help but, on clicking network applet there is no option for wireless connection. If I click hidden wireless network and open the network that I set up, the applet gives a mesage of network disconnected.
Also, if I boot with the USB adator plugged in, the boot screen says usb. 4-5 device descriptor read/64 error 110....not accepted address.....unable to enumerate.
I am able to obtain an internet connection using a cable ethernet connection direct to the router.

Hmm. Hopefully someone who knows more than me will jump in here. Try this (with adapter plugged in)
    Code:
    sudo modprobe -r zd1211rw
    sudo modprobe -i zd1211rw
    ifconfig wlan0 down
    ifconfig wlan0 up

    Unhappy

    O.K. this is the outcome;
    stephen@stephen-laptop:~$ sudo modprobe -r zd1211rw
    [sudo] password for stephen:
    stephen@stephen-laptop:~$ sudo modprobe -i zd1211rw
    stephen@stephen-laptop:~$ ifconfig wlan0 down
wlan0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
    stephen@stephen-laptop:~$ ifconfig wlan0 up
wlan0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
    stephen@stephen-laptop:~$

Just as a postscript, this USB adaptor works on this computer under XP. So it is not a fault on the laptop.

Just out of interest I put the USB adaptor in a different USB socket and this was the result when running the same test.
    stephen@stephen-laptop:~$ sudo modprobe -r zd1211rw
    stephen@stephen-laptop:~$ sudo modprobe -i zd1211rw
    stephen@stephen-laptop:~$ ifconfig wlan0 down
    SIOCSIFFLAGS: Permission denied
    stephen@stephen-laptop:~$ ifconfig wlan0 up
    SIOCSIFFLAGS: Permission denied
    stephen@stephen-laptop:~$

Whoops, my fault partly. I forgot the sudo for ifconfig.
    Code:
    sudo modprobe -r zd1211rw
    sudo modprobe -i zd1211rw
    sudo ifconfig wlan0 down
    sudo ifconfig wlan0 up

I'm running out of ideas. Plug the drive in and type
    Code:
    dmesg | tail -n 20
    Post the output.

Also, you said it was an older laptop. Is it by chance using the old 1.1 USB ports and not 2.0? The dmesg output should tell us. I saw this: Arch Linux Forums / Problems with zd1211rw (udev firmware loader misses sysfs directory)
