    Newbie help to get started..

    Hi all,

I have been looking at L1nux since micr0soft changed my desktop pc and printed "you may be the victim of a counterfeit windows installation" - the company who sold me the PC (and w1n XP are no longer around), I have decided to try Linux, after around 10 attempts using a variety of versions on a couple of machines I have finally managed to load UBUNTU onto a lapt0p alongside WIN XP.

    1) Booting to linux I am unable to connect to the wireless net or find anything that suggests it might offer a way to find and connect my network.

    2) The screen mode appears to only offer a choice of 640x480 or 800x600 resolution, nether of these allow me to see or select the 'forward' button mentioned on the email set up.

    3) From 2 I guess that no proper vga driver has been loaded, the lapt0p is a Novatech oem with a SIS graphics system, the first thing I guess is to get on the INternet.

I am a complete novice at linux, having used only OS2 then Windows 95/98/2000 & XP previously. How do I go about getting linux to recognise the wireless network and connect to the internet?

A little about me, I am 73 years old retired from 1BM many years ago, but still enjoy computing. THe name here is Bill. - thanx in advance for any help.

Well I'm not sure what's going on here but today up came a message "wireless networks available" and the internet seems to be working, - that leaves the screen resolution which is at 800*600 with the bottoms of most windows off the screen and unavailable. I have an SIS card and looking around it seems there may not be a driver for this, I am not looking for any fancy graphics capabilities just a a higher resolution is there a simple answer for this?

There is a driver: Ubuntu -- Details of package xserver-xorg-video-sis in intrepid

Probably you need to edit your xorg.conf file located at /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I would post the contents of that file here. It might not exist, since the newer xserver is able to autoconfigure everything. (Well, mostly able.) You are able to create one in that case, which alone might solve your res problem. The basic command for debian based systems is
    Code:
    dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
