Why isn't Flash working this time?

    Hello,

I've been using Ubuntu and Debian ever since version 6.06 and am now using 8.04LTS. I have always been able to get Flash to work in some way or another - usually by just installing it through the repositories or manually copying libflashplayer.so to /usr/lib/firefox/plugins and making it executable with chmod +x.

I used Synaptic to get Flash 10 (the first time I'm trying Flash 10). I got the sun-java plugin and JRE, but no matter what I try aboutlugins doesn't show up with "Shockwave Flash Player".

What am I supposed to do because it is irritating. I just happened to re-install Ubuntu because my previous installation of 8.04 got a bit "full".

    Thanks

    Yes,

I have a 3Ghz with 1.5GB memory and 256MB Geforce GT. As I said - the plugin doesn't show up in Firefox. I tried placing it under $HOME/.mozilla/plugins as well.

Perhaps the problem was Ubuntu itself? It worked previously on V9 anyway but not this time on either Flash 9 or 10.

    Solution?

Download netinstall of debian lenny, install base system, lxde and kazehakase-gecko. Head over to adobe.com, extract downloaded flash 10 tarball. ./flashplayer-install and BAM! Flash works... wondery why?

Good you could solve your problem. But it would have been nice if you were able to get it run on Ubuntu itself. Each time reinstalling the OS or (worse) distro hopping to get a feature working is bad... right?

I was following your thread but my knowledge and exp is limited and hence could not help you on this issue.

Thank you saivin for your response.

I do not know why it did not work because as I have stated: I was using Flash 9 on Ubuntu 8.04 before simply re-installing Ubuntu 8.04 and from thereon no version of Flash wanted to work. I asked on forums but I guess no one could understand why it didn't work... (just like me)?

Hence almost no replies and therefore I went back to the old Lenny... which is running very fast now anyway.

I agree though that not getting it to work on Ubuntu is bad, but I'm sure this was just bad luck or something :P
