    VNC Server for Kubuntu 8.10

    Hi,
I'm trying to figure out what the best option for a VNC Server in Kubuntu is. I have Kubuntu 8.10 with KDE 4.2. I have tried the KDE server, Krfb, but have had no luck using it (see attached picture).

In short, what I need to find is a VNC Server that:
    1. Works with Kubuntu 8.10 and KDE 4.2
    2. Works with any VNC viewers running on Windows
    3. Works though an SSH connection using PuTTy (again, Windows)
And it would be nice to have one with a GUI or some other type of easy configuration. (Not a requirement.)

    Thanks in advance!

Do you need to share the desktop so remote sees what you see, or do you just need a remote graphical desktop.

If you just need remote access, check into FreeNX server. I've had great sucess using it, works fine with KDE, and even supports sound serving too.

    Thanks for your quick response.

All I need is remote access. However, I also need to have the client software be Windows-compatible and portable (i.e. run off of a flash drive). At a glance, I'm not sure if there is a FreeNX Client that is portable. If, however, someone is aware of a Windows FreeNX Client that is able to be run on a flash drive without leaving traces behind, I'd love to know about it.

OK, I downloaded and installed the .deb's, as instructed on the website. However, none of the commands (nxserver, nxclient, nxnode) work ("Command not found.") Any ideas?

EDIT: Never mind....The binaries were in a weird directory, but I found them

NX is working out even worse. I can't get past authentication. Plus, the client leaves all kinds of stuff behind in the user's directory....

Any ideas for VNC in my situation? All I need is the VNC server on Kubuntu to be able to work in KDE 4.2 through SSH to my Windows box...I have a viewer already.

Authentication for me had something to do with group permissions for the user I was trying to log in as... I'd give more detail but I've long since forgot. Sorry. As far as leaving stuff in the user directory, did you create and launch from the batch file instructed in the second link? "set USERPROFILE=%CD%\Data" should redirect all files to the subdir data off where you lanched the NX client batch file from (assuming you're doing that from the USB stick, that's where files should stay).

Going back to the VNC approach,
The only VNC package in *buntu I know of that is designed with compatibility in mind is the official vnc4server. TightVNC server is the other one I assume you're using which uses standard gz compression, which might be what's causing your trashed graphics (if that's what you're using).

I guess, which ever package you have installed, try the other one.

Well, I ended up getting x11vnc server, and it was fairly easy to work with. Thanks for all of your help!

Whoops, I didn't see that was a server (wasn't spelled out in the desc, though it was implied as such if I had actually read it :P ). I'm glad you did find something that works, sorry I blew it. Win some lose some. Good luck and enjoy!
