Sorry, I should have linked that above. Here you go.

OpenSuse is probably not an option for me. Before Ubuntu I had Suse Entrerprise Desktop 10 and I noticed that there were not all the SW available for my needs. Especially many music/studio related applications were missing. That's why I changed to Ubuntu. I don't give up yet. Everything works well there except the screen resolution.

From 10.3 on, OpenSuSE has made the repositories a part of the community project. Check the following link for the availability of the packages you'd want to install. You'll probably have better luck between Packman and the community repo with SuSE than you did with SLED 10 and possibly even Ubuntu (I have some 3D software on my OpenSuSE laptop not available on Ubuntu repos).

    Software.openSUSE.org Software Search

If it doesn't have what you want, then I guess stick with Ubuntu on vesa driver... but here's an idea that worked for another user (cousinlucky)... Run OpenSuSE anyway, save the xorg.conf to an external drive. Back on Ubuntu, replace the xorg.conf with the one from SuSE. It seems like a lot, but if all else is failing....

    IT WORKS NOW!
First of all I want to thank you D-cat and other guys for excellent help. I have learned lot of drver configurations via this forum. What I did?

    1. I installed first the via driver 5.74.33.85a-44597
    2. Then I replaced the xconf.org with the file I found through ubuntuforums.org
    Code:
    http://www.lindvallit.com/tarmo/xorg.conf

There is still one minor problem left since the System preferences->Screen Resolution doesn't start but I'm currently very satisfied with the resolution (1024x600) and there is no need to change it.

    Thanks a lot
    Leevi
