    Problem ripping audio CD

I've been trying to rip a CD to library in Rthymbox. On the same CD it rips just fine until it reaches 85% and then "pauses" i.e it freezes and locks up. Then the only way to do anything is to manually eject the CD. It's freezes at exactly 85% every time I try. Any ideas? I'm wondering if its a memory issue although I should have plenty.

    Thanks

My first thought is that the CD might be damaged or scratched. Have you tried ripping it with a different program? I believe Ubuntu comes with Sound Juicer by default as well. I like asunder, myself, which is available in the Ubuntu repos.

    Have you tried CDParanoia?

Cdparanoia will also read and repair data from CDs that have been damaged in some way.
You might have better luck. It can be installed from the apt repos.

No I've not tried anything else except the Sound Juicer installed by default. I wanted to get that at least working before I messed with other utilities. I dont think the CD is damaged since it plays in other players including windows and the same problem occurs with other CD's as well. But it freezes up at difffernt points 75- 85% depending on the CD size.

Come to think of it I did have a similar problem when I tried to fetch photos using Fspot from my camera. It froze too up but havent had time to see if thats an ongoing problem as well. Maybe related?

    Unhappy

Ripping CDs I do frequently since I use CDs for reading (listening) books. Grip you can use someone said but I had no luck. Instead I tried ripperX. It works half i.e. The first tracks are mostly not ripped. Then I use Ripoff.
The idea is to rip the wav-files on the Cd - change them to mp3 and rename them since I want to have all tracks in order on my mp3-payer.

What do you have for free space on the root partition? Your temp folder could be cramming full?

D-Cat, I think you might be on the right page. If mariane has two partitions and one is root and is close to full....if it's consistently quitting at a certain point it would make sense that it's because your disk is full.

Have you tried ripping another cd or is it all cd's quitting at near the same point? Does an individual cd always freeze up at the same point?

Also, have you tried ripping in another format, ogg, mp3, etc..?

Lastly, are you able to play the cd within your Ubuntu install?

    Thanks all for your comments

Well I think I need to update my comments. After successfully ripping several diferent CD's without an inkling of a problem (dont know why I had trouble before??) it seems the problem IS limited to the CD in question. i.e the first one mentioned which freezes at 85%. Maybe its damaged but when played it certainly doesnt seems so. Well at least I'm able to rip other CD's anyway.
