Linux locking up for questionable reasons
Hello, I am an Xubuntu user that is currently running Xubuntu a Compaq Presario 700 laptop. My problems on this laptop include the following:
1. Locking up when I start my firefox broswer and when I'm on it for more than 5 min.
- This usually happens when I'm on pidgen and internet at the same
time.
This is my main problem, and I don't understand why it kept locking up. I downloaded Epiphany broswer, and Geleon Browser and I'm currently finding which one is the better of the two. I really enjoy my firefox browser, but if I can't even get it to respond the way I need to... how can I use it. I haven't tried reinstalling it, and I don't know how that will make any difference.
Does anyone have a fix for this problem? Or is anyone having similar problems?

What do you mean by locking up? It freezes? Does it go grey? What version of firefox are you using and which Xubuntu release?

I had problems with Flash in Firefox just making it lock and go grey at random.
This thread solved that problemIf we hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate! (Zapp Brannigan)
My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

Yes, it just freezes. And after using just the galeon browser or Epiphany it stopped doing those things.... Could it be the flash plugin in my Mozilla Browser? Any suggestions in keeping the laptop stable in firefox?
I used to think it was the screensaver, and my power settings on my laptop. I disabled idle mode (black screen) and the screen saver and it still did that when I left firefox running. Any suggestions?

It could be the flashplayer. Did you look at the posted guide to see if it applies to your case? As for whether your system can handle it, well, Firefox is a bit of a resource hog. You can use the program "top" to see memory and cpu usage while firefox is running. (Just open a terminal and type "top" I'm pretty sure Xubuntu has it installed by default.)
