No display.
I had 1280x760, which was configured for a CRT. Now I got a KVM, and it's plugged in to a bigger LCD monitor. 1280x760 was tall and skinny, so I tried 1280x800, which was the highest, and then my lower task panel disappeared

I changed it back to 1280x760, and no display. Restart X a bunch of times, but no-go.
1280x800 is not even for a LCD anyway - it's for a CRT. How do I get display back, and how do I import LCD settings into xorg.conf???
Thanks...

Try [Ctrl + Alt + -] to hot drop the resolution. Failing that, restart the whole computer. If you can't get the thing going, restart in Recover mode and select the console. When you get your prompt, type
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Answer any q's the best you can, then reboot.
Cross your fingers and with any luck your computer will come back to life. Note in the future, most modern LCD monitors have an auto-configure button that you can press and it will compensate for screen geometry. If not, consult the monitor's manual on how to work the buttons.
Note2: Sometimes monitor detection fails when connected through a KVM switch. If you find yourself locked at 800x600, try rerunning the above command with the monitor connected directly to the computer.

Yikes. Did not happen. Non-default framebuffer selection gave no editable options.
Into BIOS now - Primary Video controller... was on 'Auto', now on 'Onboard' (might not matter - vids are integrated card, not dedicated). Watch for smoke
Next option - Onboard video buffer - 1mG or 8 mG.
WOW - Read the manual. My monitor has Display Data Channel, to send Extended Display Identification Data, to assist in Plug and Play.
Oh yeah? Izzatso?
EDIT:
Uh-oh. Worse than smoke. No display, no vids, NO BIOS. I think that switch turned off video for the Onboard graphics, so it would go to a dedicated card. Which there ain't.
Pull the battery? I was able to do clear NVRAM 'in the dark' (heard the right beepset), but this only detects and configures hard disks, that I know.
Help?

This is such a common complaint with Ubuntu it's not funny. Sorry I didn't answer earlier, dinner.
Anyway, time to drag out the tool kit (not litterally). Please post the contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf and the output of lspci | grep -i vga

No display. No BIOS display, nothing. See above post.
All I did was change BIOS Primary Video Controller from 'Auto', to 'Onboard'. Then darkness.
I can hear it boot, and I know my way through the dark pretty well, even got BIOS screenpics in my book and web, but cannot confirm, to go back to 'Auto'...
EDIT:
Went all the way through the BIOS steps in the dark to Primary Video Controller, and got it right. Found that out when I plugged it back into the CRT, because it still would NOT light up the LCD, even DIRECTLY, NOT through the KVM.
Anyway, booted up the CRT, and it is displaying at 1280x1024.

EDIT:
And even MORE confused now. I tried one last time into the LCD. Directly, no KVM, no-go. Plugged into the KVM, and TA-DAAA!
It detected the LCD, by brand, and is displaying proper resolution. 1280x1024. I don't know what happened. Everything that I did, I posted here. Do you see anything D-Cat???

Was this monitor a factory refurb? That is odd-ball. Well, I guess as long as it's working now, right?
