Hello and welcome to the forums.
You might want to start a new thread for removing Windows and Installing Linux. It will get more responses in my opinion.
Check this thread for Best distro for new users, you might find something you are looking for.

Be sure to take the distro quiz too, it's a really helpful tool.

hi there. A few things I'd say.
1. I would not recommend abandoning Vista until you play around with Linux for awhile, you may be in for a rude awakening if for instance you want a certain game which just refuses to work in Wine (other examples as well but that's the easiest). You can dual boot for a few months, then as you get more comfortable with linux you always have the option to abandon Windows all together -- I currently have a VM XP install just for netflix and MS Access....after over 6 years with linux I'm still stuck on those two...
2. There are a ton of distros that meet those requirements:
I am personally a huge fan of Ubuntu for new users, I've now tried over 15 distros and always end up with at least one Ubuntu install.
2. Others you may want to try
Kubuntu
OpenSuse
Fedora Core
Mint
alll of those you'll get what you're looking for, out of the box you'll not have the greatest appearance but all are customizable and you'll be able to make them look nice. Kubuntu uses kde and Ubuntu uses gnome, I personally think KDE looks nicer but I think Gnome is much more functional, especially in comparison with the newest KDE release (KDE 4)
For wine, depends really on what you are trying. Some things work great, some things work okay, some things don't work at all. If you go to the Wine HQ site they have a list of programs and they give "medals" to let you know how they workBodhi 1.3 & Bodhi 1.4 using E17

If you settle on a distro which uses the gnome desktop, you will find gnome-look.org a fantastic resource for themes, icon sets, wallpapers and much, much more stuff that will get your install looking wonderful.

vmplayer or virtualbox-ose
to make a partition is pretty easy, I still wouldn't suggest abandoning Windows out of the blue like that but if you do, more power to you

I think you should just try a couple of LiveCD's just to check them out. You do not need to partition or format anything to use the LiveCD's.
These distros listed on this page are all LiveCD's, if you are interested.
