I think you will need to burn the iso file onto a DVD-R. CD is too small.

I have rcgreen's Q. The Kubuntu desktop image is 699MB, which will fit on a standard 700 MB CD-R. There is a DVD image available which is 3.6GB, don't know what's on it, never D/l'd it.
If you have the regular desktop iso, then you should be able to just burn it to a CD. Are you using the "burn as image", or are you trying to burn it as a file on a CD (that will fail, you must burn it as an image). Different burners do this different ways, like Roxio is File -> Record CD from Image. There's also some free burn softwares made for only the task of burning images (like burnatonce).

If your image isn't just under 700MB or 3.6 GB (if it is the DVD image, which will say dvd in its name), then run a MD5 sum check on it first... you might have a bogus or corrupt image.
