There are two sets of instructions. One is the automated installer. The other is the manual method.
Also make sure your BIOS settings didn't somehow change to put the hard drive in priority over your USB in the boot order.
When doing things manually, there's a host of options and steps that could easily be skipped or forgotten. It also gives you some degree of flexibility if you want to try a different method.

First I'd try the manual method above, it might fix something the automated installer is overlooking.
There are a couple of other alternate methods you could try as well, e.g., since there is no hard drive, you might get away with installing it as if it was a hard drive and boot with grub...

Hi,
In addition to the excellent advice offered here...
On the pendrivelinux site:
Boot and run Linux from a USB flash memory stick | USB Pen Drive Linux
You will find instructions on creating a usb boot CD but please make sure you follow the instructions to create an ubuntu one! Basically after you have made the usb boot CD you pop it into your optical drive, make sure that your bios is pointing at the CD drive, and when the system boots into the CD there will be an option there to boot from usb. Select that and, well, it worked for me.
