Tarballs install - IBM video drivers

The best resolution I can achieve on my IBM NetVista 8305 G7U desktop is 800x600. I've located, downloaded, and copied the i915Graphics.tar.gz file at Lenovo's website to my home folder where I extracted its contents. This is where my problems start. It doesn't seem to matter what I do (so far) it doesn't look as if it is getting installed. I'm running Ubuntu 8.10. The command I used that appeared to be the correct one to install the video driver was apt-get install. A couple lines of messages scrolled by and then it was done. After rebooting, I still only have 800x600 as the best resolution option available. What am I doing wrong? There are no read me files in the package.

Do you know what chipset the video uses: nvidia, radeon, intel? This is usually quoted on the pc manufacture's specs. Once you know what chipset you have, install the chipset driver from the ubuntu site if it is available. If not, check your apt-get syntax to see if you are installing the correct driver.

I'll have to get back to you on the chipset. I do know it is an Intel 845G if that helps. I'm not at the system right now and won't be for a couple days.

The command I entered after extracting the files and changing into the directory that was created was: "apt-get install"

That seemed to do the trick because a couple messages scrolled by but nothing changed with my display resolution list. 800x600 is still the best I can do.

Looking at big blues website, it's got an intel 845G graphics chip.
Have a look at this on ubuntu forum for a pointer:

I'll try the 810 driver. I must have missed that thread in my searches. Thanks. I'll let you know how it goes.
