Another display/resolution problem
So after reading a bunch of threads, I decided to create my own. It seems like each individual case is different. I installed the Nvidia driver going to System-> Administration-> Hardware Drivers. Put it in use and then the screen resolution would no got above 640X320. So, I saw someone say edit your xorg.conf file with a bunch of subsections and different screen resolutions. Did that and my screen went black. Logged single user mode and fixed that. Now, I'm stuck at 800X600 and I'm not using the Nvidia driver.
I'm running 8.10. I have a Samsung SyncMaster 914v.

I am always going to have screen resolution problems. My ubuntu 8.04 os does not see or recognize my Via graphics card in my hp desktop computer. My monitor's screen resolution is 1280X1024.
Every website I visited looked like images from a fun house mirror. Eventually I transfered the X11 conf file from my suse 10 0s into ubuntu. Each browser I have on my machine does its own thing with websites Firefox and Konqueror are the worst Epiphany is the best. There are programs ( such as F-spot ) that froze my computer when I try to use them so I have to get rid of them.
I like Ubuntu but I need a custom built rather than a store bought computer full of very cheap equipment.
What I am suggesting is that if you have run another distro on your computer you may be able to transfer the file on your machine as I did.Linux registered user # 414321

Try to re-install it using Envy Script. Install it through Synaptic Package Manager and execute envyng command in Terminal. It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Casper,
I tried the nvidia driver and could only get (I think) 640x320. It was definitely less than 800x600. Just to be clear, isn't using envy script similar to installing the driver with synaptic manager?? Would it be better to download the driver and install it myself??

Envy script is a bit better than Synaptic because it tries to configure xorg.conf file. In case Envy doesn't work, we have to edit xorg.conf file manually.
