8.04 synaptic package manager will not install onto computr

I do not know what caused it by my synaptic package manager will download programs but it will not install them. I kept getting a failed to run /usr/sbin/apt-listbugs apt so I removed the aptlist bugs using synaptic which just made the situation worse. I can't even reinstall it now. Is there a way to fix this, please?

I don't know if you can purge a package after it has already been removed, but that's how this one apparently is supposed to be done.

I hope it helps because I have no idea how one would fix this after the fact (short of a reinstall).

I believe ubuntu has aptitude installed by default as well. https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/serverg.../aptitude.html

I don't know if that would be effected by the same bug.

You can also download packages from here Ubuntu -- Ubuntu Packages Search and install using dpkg

I went back to the synaptic package manager and redownloaded and reinstalled apt which cured both of my problems. I do not get the warning that apt listchanges.glade can not be found nor do I get the prompt that the /usr/sbin/apt-listbugs apt is not connecting.

Perhaps the Ubuntu ghost got worried because I sent for a Fedora cd and it decided that it was time to ease up on the old man.. And Thanks for the links.
