What was the action these icons performed? Were they to launch the applications or did they just appear when the application was opened?

They were meant to appear while the app was running or minimized. They weren't gadgets. For example Ktorrent was there and did the downloading. What happened was that I accidentally right clicked on thes icons one by one and hit the last option "remove this....sth...".

I know the ones you mean and I can't find a solution on Google. I'm not at a computer running Kubuntu at the moment so I will have a look later when I get home and see if I can figure it out

I did get a chance to have a quick look last night but I'm afraid I couldn't find anything. I forgot to ask, what version of KDE are you? . I will take another look later tonight for you

It is almost certainly 4.2 then but if you want to check you can have a look at a version of one of the KDE applications. For example to view the version information of Kate type:

    Code:
    kate -v
This should like the version of QT, Kate and the version of KDE
