Angry No Screen Found error with Nvidia drivers

I've tried several different drivers, uninstalled/reinstalled, etc, but to no avail. Using any nvidia driver leaves me with the X server error: No Screen Found, then it aborts and leaves me with a diagnostic message. To even load the gmd I have to reboot and start in recovery mode to repair xserver.

If anyone knows how to remedy this, please share

P.S. I've tried installing with Envy and with Synaptic Package Manager too, still nothing. Even recommended drivers are currently unusable

    PC info:
    Code:
    680i board
    intel Q6600
GeForce 8800GT (normally in SLI, but with these problems only one is in)
    Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex)
    Current xorg.conf
    Code:
    # nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
    # nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder58) Wed Nov 26 11:21:13 PST 2008

    Hi and Welcome !

First of all, replace "nvidia" with "nv" or "vesa" in xorg.conf file and check if GUI works fine. We will try to re-install Nvidia later.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

I've been messing with it and found that now when I try to install the driver it says that it has already been installed (version 180.44) which seems rather odd seeing as I still have very minor use of the card as is
