ubuntu apps not functioning!!! help i'm new to this!!!
hi, i just switched over to ubuntu from windows xp. [tonight]
and everything on my pc was being slow and firefox wasn't closing out.
now during that time ubuntu update was running.
i foolishly restarted the pc with the update incomplete.
when ubuntu restarted a little box in the lower right hand corner said updates were unable to be completed or something like that.
now when i try to shut down, load firefox, connect to wifi, and get updates for ubuntu it wont take any actions or respond.
now i havent really even put any new files on it so im not afraid to lose any personal data, i have that on my various thumb drives so i'd like to restore it to the way it was when i first booted the dvd containing the operating system.
i really need help with this so please answer as soon as possible
thnx,
jim
- 04-07-2009 #2I'd then just start over and do another reinstall. Doesn't take that long and is probably the easiest thing to do. Just reboot the CD and go for it.now i havent really even put any new files on it so im not afraid to lose any personal data

I can't believe this! I run the same durn Laptop, but I stuck a 1 gig stick in it.
Mine runs excellant on Ubuntu 8.o4 LTS. I locked the Kernel at 2.24.24 because everything works excellant with that kernel. So I haven't updated it to Kernel 2.24.27. What a coincedenceLinux Registered User # 475019

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I was wondering why you're sticking with an older kernel rokytnji? Surely there are security risks with doing that?

- 04-07-2009 #8I might be mistaken in my thinking, But I was afeared after getting everything set up on this laptop, that a kernel upgrade would break/keep something from working. My Laptops are older models, so when a kernel quits support for a module that works on older gear, I am screwed. I let everything thing else update. Not the kernel though. Didn't know security would be a problem. Damn Small Linux runs the 2.4 kernel. ?I was wondering why you're sticking with an older kernel rokytnji?Linux Registered User # 475019

The 2.4 and 2.6 kernel lines (and maybe even the 2.2 line) are constantly being updated; sometimes to add new functionality, but also to add security, so it's normally a good idea to keep up to date.
Don't worry about it breaking stuff though -- when Ubuntu updates the kernel, it will keep the old version just in case there's a problem with the newer one. If something breaks, it's nice and easy to roll back to the one you like -- you just have to select it from the grub menu when you boot up.Registered Linux user #388328 || Registered LFS user #15880
